As the second gig of the series Sound Friction, The Zen Ensemble will be the most noiseless and tranquil sound performance of this year.

Inspired by the concept of emptiness in Zen Buddhism, the dynamic Japanese multi-disciplinary group mAtter, together with selected Hong Kong sound artists, will bring us 'The Zen Ensemble' - a conceptual group that explores the composition and performance of silence.

For this special performance, a set of rules is composed to guide the artists to play ‘silence’ rather than making sound. In Zen Buddhism (an adaptation of Chinese Buddhism), it is said that our existence can only be found in the silence of the mind (or in fact, no-mind). The Zen Ensemble will be the first and only sound performance in Hong Kong that invites you to experience the absence of sound.

Together with stunning live visuals, this quiet sound revolution of The Zen Ensemble at Videotage is definitely a must-go for electronics and sound art lovers.

mAtter is a Japanese design group and independent music label that combines talents from various disciplines, including the acclaimed designer and sound composer Yukitomo Hamasaki, in which he draws his inspirations through nature elements such as light and space. Together the group blends sound and produce projects that integrate architecture, image-making and design. The tranquil sound quality contains layered waves of irregular clicks, pops, beeps and breaks, which brings the noise listening experience and sound art to a new level. For example the high frequency sound used in the album "d+p", some listeners claimed that it has an effect to distort their perspective on surrounding environmental noise.

Jointly presented by Videotage and Re-records, the Sound Friction series take sonic art as the anchor point and develop a creative performance platform for cross-cultural, cross-media, cross-disciplinary and cross-genres collaboration between artists.

About the Artists

mAtter:
mAtter is a sound & design project, with works centering around Yukitomo Hamasaki. The label takes approaches from various media such as sound design, architecture, and product design, in which the members interpret and restructures these concepts in different ways based on their own perspection, and try to achieve the goal of constructing dense space. The members of mAtter are not fixed, they collaborate depend on the projects. Its members consist of musicians, architects, video artists, and writers. Current members include:

Sound artist, guitarist and bassist. In 2002, he set up his own record label Lona Records, and started working as a producer. From the end of 2002 to 2009, he released 5 albums and 5 cd singles. A growing concern, Yukitomo Hamasaki's minimalist sound and design imprint mAtter has expanded to include a new generation of artists, two of whom have become recent collaborators in a number of projects. By joining forces with Go Koyashiki and shotahirama, both accomplished composers in their own right, Hamasaki has created something of a movement within the current Japanese scene. Blending intuitive improvisation with electronic composition, their previous performances have often been set to evocative photography, capturing minimalist patterns in the urban soundscape.
As their international activity picks up, it is getting harder to catch all of these fine artists in one sitting. It might do you well to check in on team mAtter while they are still in town.

> Tetuzi Akiyama + Cal Lyall

Part-iconoclast, part-bluesman, and one of the leading players in modern Japanese improvisation, Tetuzi Akiyama has taken his guitar far and wide, gaining a large international following while influencing countless younger musicians in the process. With a certain stark minimalism, Akiyama forged a name for himself in the onkyo scene in the late 1990s with the likes of Otomo Yoshihide and Toshimaru Nakamura. These days, he explores the full resonance of his instrument from a myriad of musical gateways, from primitavist leanings to drone and even some hypnotic guitar boogie.

On this evening he'll be joined by improvising artist and electronic musician Cal Lyall (Tetragrammaton, Jahiliyyah), who will shed his characteristic layers of drone for a downtuned guitar duo of some (very loose) blues lassitude.

Percussionist and multimedia artist Cyril Hernandez explores the way our bodies interact with space, using elements of choreography, installation and inventive musicianship to create captivating work that transcends artistic boundaries.

As a performing artist, Cyril seeks to communicate with a wide audience, preferring public spaces and environments for his work. He engages viewers by pulling them into his performance with circus sideshow aplomb, while at the same time hoodwinking them to eventually reveal the greater complexity lurking within his visual and rhythmic ideas.

> Jean-François Laporte (from Québec)

Integrating visual art and sound exploration, Québécois artist Jean-François Laporte has been an influential figure on the contemporary art scene since the mid-1990s. Taking an intuitive approach to creating music, Laporte has learned his art through concrete experimentation on matter, actively listening to each sound, object or material. Much of his work is the result of working with raw material, devising simple yet ingenious constructions born of each material he explores.

Receiving his fifth "Prix Opus" last year, Laporte was named "Facteur d'Instrument de Musique de l'Année" by the CQM (Conseil Québécois de la Musique). This gives timely recognition to the quality of Laporte's work and the importance his visionary musical inventions.

This live collabolation features a duet between Yukitomo Hamasaki [sound artist,founder of Japanese sound/art publishing organization mAtter] and shotahirama [Tokyo based Japanese-American sound artist organizing SIGNALDADA] - a continuing collaboration between two highly regarded composers. Their first, 'Abstrakt/Konkret', was a 40 minute live performance in SuperDelux, Tokyo in 28th June 2010 [presented by Soundroom #45]

And now they have this new live collab 'Abstrakt/Konkret 2.0'... 2.0 used 30 files which were field recorded between April and May (2010) in east side of Tokyo City by Shota and Yukitomo. They came together for the mix in Yukitomo's mAtter studio in June of that year. They re-synth and concretize these files and the cyclical process continued right up until the final mix.

Yukitomo Hamasaki and shotahirama blend the unstructured and imaginative qualities of improvisation with the satisfying sculpture of composition. Yukitomo's sinewaves, his style reminiscent of Modern Art and Modern films, perfectly complements Shota with his powerful blend of shimmering synth and passionate electronics.

Together they have combined to create new 30 minute of Abstrakt and Konkret poems.

Yukitomo Hamasaki
is sound artist and he has founder of Japanese sound/art publishing organization "mAtter" besed in Tokyo.his music career at the age of 18,  taking his cues from DJing. His interested are light, a cloud, complex pattern and the collision that has happened by micro space. And his theme is to compose them as a musical composition. Moreover, his another work : the installation work and the graphic design.

shotahirama is a Sound Artist/novelist from New York, US and currently live in Tokyo, Japan. Inspired by Modern Art, Dada, Bauhaus and Postmodern literature. Also known for the founding of the SIGNAL DADA, Edition NIkO (NIkO Label), ENG (electronoise group) and JANDEATH. His musical focus is characterized by digital synth and field recording with computer software processing and improvisation, which generates a large palette of possible sounds including; grainy textures, complex patterns of smooth drones, and microscopic clicks and cuts.

Shota, as a solo artist or in other project, has released music on the following record labels: Improvised Music From Japan (Japan. BOOK/CD compilation, 2009), Re-Records (Hongkong. CDR album, 2010), mAtter (Japan. BOOK/CDR, BOOK/DVD, coming 2010), Symbolic Interaction (Japan. CD compilation, coming 2010), and more.

シカゴ音楽院にてPatricia Moreheadに作曲を、バークリー音楽院にてCsoundで良く知られるRichard Boulangerに音響合成を学ぶ。

その後、シカゴ、ニューヨーク、マイアミと、ラップトップ・アーティストとして、そしてレコーディング・エンジニアとして活動する。
アーティストとしてはTV PowやJason Solidayと共演し、またエンジニアとしては、Black SheepやToday's My Spaceout Dayの録音/ミックスを手がける。

また自ら「ポスト・ケージアン」を自称し、現代におけるプロセスとしての作曲を実践し、ソフトウェア作品も多くある。

2003年より、Koutarou Fukuiとオンラインレーベル、on;(do)を運営。
Jake ElliottやAram Sheltonなどの意欲的なリリースを続ける。
抽象音楽だけでなく、HIPHOPにも造詣が深く、Meswy、Mick Bolgard等の海外アーティストのリミックスも多く手がける。
